The Email Domains of Your Leads Will Be Matched to the Primary Domains of Accounts in Apollo
Because Salesforce doesn't allow leads to be associated with accounts (only contacts), we have to infer the relationship between SFDC leads and their accounts in Apollo. To do this, we match up the domain of a lead's email with the primary domain (not subdomain) of an account's website.
Note: You can disable this from happening by using the feature detailed here.
The primary domain of the website listed in an account's enrichment field is used to identify it in Apollo (think of it as an account ID) -
This website is then matched to the email domain of any imported leads from SFDC so that we can associate them properly. If nothing matches up, however, then we will not be able to reliably associate them.
As an example, the following lead was created in SFDC with just a first name, last name, and email -
Because the domain of the email (sap.com) matches the domain of an account in Apollo (SAP), we were able to correctly associate the lead after it was automatically pushed to our platform -
Important Note: Leads with the same primary domain in their emails will always be considered part of the same company, even if their subdomains differ. For example, lead1@forum.domain.com and lead2@store.domain.com would both be associated with the account for www.domain.com in Apollo. This is because we cannot yet differentiate accounts by subdomain.
